What I Use
A possibly-current list of tech things I use. (Last updated in April 2026.)
Hardware
- My main computer is a MacBook Pro M5, with 32G RAM and a 1TB SSD. When “docked,” it’s connected to:
- Keychron Q3 with Boba U4T keyswitches
- Apple Magic Trackpad 2
- Vanatoo Transparent One Encore speakers
- Apple Studio Display
- The Mac Studio (10-core M1 Max, 32G RAM, 1TB SSD) I had been using as a desktop is now a server, with a Samsung T7 External 4TB SSD.
- I also have an iPad Air (4th generation, A14 CPU) and an M1 MacBook Air, the latter of which sometimes runs Asahi Linux.
Software
I’ve found Emacs taking over progressively more writing tasks from other applications; I’m using it for creative writing, technical writing, and blogging (including publishing and source control). I still use BBEdit for some bits and bobs, Tot for ephemera, and Marked 2 for proofing. (The forthcoming Marked 3 is moving from a $14 one-time charge to a $36/year subscription, and as much as I like Marked, that’s a steep ask.)
For other applications, I frequently use:
- Coding: Emacs, Xcode
- Image editing: Acorn
- RSS reading: Unread
- Read-it-later: Instapaper, integrated with my Kobo Libra 2
- Social media: Tapestry and Ivory
While I’ve tried several other browsers—I was all-in on Arc before its developers went stupid—I keep coming back to Safari. Yes, other browsers have better extension stories, but apparently not better enough to stick. And Apple Pay on the web is, it turns out, really nice.
